Start with your child’s grade. Many books fit more than one grade, so you’ll see some in more than one group.

Series keep kids reading. Each one has questions for every book we’ve covered, in order.

Know your child’s Guided Reading Level? Choose it to see matching books.

Guided Reading Levels (GRL) were developed by Dr. Irene Fountas and Dr. Gay Su Pinnell. I use the levels published by trusted sources rather than assigning my own, so not every book has one yet. The grades below are approximate. Use them as a starting point, and let your child’s comfort with the book be the real guide.

Reading level chart: how GRL, DRA, Lexile and AR levels compare

Schools use different systems to level books. This chart lines them up by school grade, so you can translate whichever one your child’s teacher uses. The ranges are approximate and overlap from one grade to the next.

GRL is the Guided Reading Level (Fountas & Pinnell). DRA is the Developmental Reading Assessment. Lexile ranges are the typical text measures for each grade from MetaMetrics. AR book level is written as grade and month, so 4.5 means about the middle of 4th grade. AR points show how much reading a book is, not how hard it is.

Many schools use Accelerated Reader (AR). Your child reads a book, then takes a short quiz at school to earn points. A book’s AR points show how much reading it is, based on its length and difficulty: a short chapter book is worth about 1 point, while a long novel can be worth 10 or more. Points aren’t a reading level, so use the grade and reading level sections above to find books at the right difficulty.
