Through the years of working on this website, I've encountered some pretty amazing parents and have received remarkable stories. Here are a couple of inspiring stories with the hopes to encourage and lift all who read them. If you have a story you'd like to share, please contact me.
“We are foster parents and received our 2 sons 4 years ago. They were severely neglected and abused. The oldest was 6 and had completed 1 year of Kindergarten. He was unable to identify a single letter of the alphabet or count to 5. He had emotional behavior issues that made his year of repeating Kindergarten for us very difficult. He rarely made it a full hour before we had to take him home because he was too disruptive. The teacher told us we should just accept that he would always be limited and should consider an institution. I told her that was not good enough for him. We worked very hard with him and his reading. As soon as we could we got him into the Magic Tree House series. Your study questions were our salvation for reading with him and helping him develop comprehension skills. At the end of the 2nd grade he received an award for the top 10 readers in his class of 145 students. He is now in the 3rd grade and is on the A/B honor role. He also just had his first recital playing classical trumpet. We adopted both boys last year. We got a new foster child a year ago who had to repeat 2nd grade. He was reading at kindergarten level. Since we now had a roadmap, it was easier to catch him up. He ended the year 1st in his class in their computer reading program.” – Steve
"I had neck two surgeries about two years ago, which have left me with some metal plates and lots of screws in my neck. We were an avid read-aloud family, but after my surgeries reading aloud was getting more and more difficult. Since we homeschool, I had to pick and choose was I was going to 'read' during the day and unfortunately books took a back seat! My boys went 6 months with no books being read to them, which just about killed me! I expressed my concern of read-alouds with my librarian and she suggested that we listen to audio books. I really felt as though we were cheating by listening to books, but decided to give it a try! It was a HUGE success, that school year we listened to 32 books! I now want to add some comprehension questions to all of the books we are listening too! And that is were Diane comes in - I am so excited to have found such an awesome resources! I can't wait to dig into some more books - our goal this year is 50!" - Michelle
