Esther Forbes won a Pulitzer Prize for her biography of Paul Revere, and while researching it she became interested in the apprentices of colonial Boston. That led to Johnny Tremain, her novel about a young silversmith's apprentice caught up in the American Revolution, which won the Newbery Medal in 1944.
