Lloyd Alexander was inspired by the legends of Wales, where he trained as a soldier during World War II. His Chronicles of Prydain follow Taran, an assistant pig-keeper who longs to be a hero. The final book, The High King, won the Newbery Medal. The series is a classic fantasy adventure about growing up and learning what true heroism means.
