Sid Fleischman worked as a stage magician before becoming a writer, and his books are full of tricks and surprises. The Whipping Boy, about a spoiled prince and the orphan boy who is punished in his place, won the Newbery Medal in 1987. His son, Paul Fleischman, is also a Newbery Medal–winning author.
